Is your office suffering from the all-too-familiar nuisance of a cluttered, messy workspace? We’ve all been there before: empty coffee cups you’ve been meaning to toss, Post-It notes invading your desktop monitor, files and papers piled a mile high. But did you know that this seemingly harmless desk disarray that you swear you’ll get to cleaning tomorrow, could actually be inhibiting your performance at work?
Employees who work in a chaotic mess will undoubtedly produce work that mimics their environment—and there are statistics to prove it. A 2011 report by OfficeMax found that 77% of the 1,000 adults surveyed believe that office clutter most certainly undermines their productivity and motivation. According to Forbes.com, this figure is also directly “in line with previous studies revealing that executives waste six weeks a year searching for lost items and information.” Just take a second and think about how much extra work you could get done with six additional weeks a year…a ton.
What’s more? A cluttered office space not only messes with your own productivity, but can also put you at risk of being viewed as inefficient/unproductive by your peers, and more importantly, your employers.
At Desk Incorporated, offering our customers organizational tactics, tools and furniture in Denver and the entire US, has been the cornerstone of our company for over 50 years. If you are someone who could benefit from a little de-cluttering in your own workspace, check out the following tips to begin enhancing productivity, and achieving a more organized working environment:
Keep Storage Spaces Clear of Your Desktop
Avoid placing and/or storing anything other than the essentials (computer, keyboard, stapler, pen cup, lamp) on top of your desk. Instead, opt for a system that is easy to follow and is uniform for all your files—such as filing cabinets and desk drawers.
Tame Your Cables
Cables that run under and on top of your desk can quickly make for a less-than-attractive (and not to mention, distracting) sight. Think of ways to creatively use cubicles, or of ways to position your workstations, so that cables can be kept organized and relatively out of sight.
Enlarge Your Workspace
Or at least add some extra storage. A good trick to use to achieve this? Think vertical. Raise your monitor, and make use of the space under your desk.
Give Everything a Home
If you don’t take the time to designate a spot for everything you need in your office, your desk will automatically become where it lives. Be mindful of returning everything to its rightful spot once you are done using it (this only take a few seconds – we promise.)
Don’t Forget Digital Clutter
Chances are the majority of the files you use live on your computer. If these digital files are a mess, you can count on added time and stress when searching for what you need. Take some time to organize your computer in a way that will eliminate unnecessary time and stress in the future.
